music monday presents...

... a GIVEAWAY!!!
{are you excited? i really hope so because i am!!}

you may remember, a while back i posted about a duo called cults. {you can play one of their songs in the player on the sidebar} well, about 5 weeks ago they announced that they'd be selling a limited 400 copies of their 7" single pressed on bright yellow vinyl.
bright. yellow. vinyl. {just in case you didn't catch that before}

just look how delicious the cover is.
i had to have one, and i had a feeling they would sell out fast. they did. but i got mine. holla.
i'd read that they wouldn't ship til around the 20th of april, so there was a lot of waiting involved... waiting is hard for a gal who never got so good at being patient.
still working on that one.
i checked the letter box each day, even though i knew it wouldn't be there. but then... last tuesday, i checked the box and there it was. i came undone. smiles were leaping right off my face as i feverishly tore apart the envelope as if a 5 million dollar check was inside.
i got it open and it was even more beautiful in person than i hoped it would be. and the vinyl was yellow. so yellow. this led to more acrobatic smiles.
i put it right on the turntable and it sounded like perfection. even more smiles. my face started to hurt. we played it over and over and over. and smiled and sang and danced all over the house.
it was good.

then...
{this is the part where i get to the giveaway}
... wednesday, i checked the letter box just out of habit i suppose and what to my absolute surprise, there was another one!!! i thought it was a mistake, a happy accident if you will... they'd shipped it to me twice, lucky me. but in fact what had happened was somebody else wanted me to have this record just as much as i wanted me to have it. they bought it for me the very same night i bought it for myself, and had it shipped to my house hoping it would arrive in time for my birthday, which it did. isn't that a kick in the pants?

so... now i have two. and keeping them both, though oddly tempting, would be greedy and weird.
{this is where you come in}
leave a comment on this post and you'll be automatically entered to win this...
... and a few other treasures for extra charisma.
if you'd like to up your chances at winning, you can also blog about the giveaway and leave a link to your post in a comment -and/or- tell me your 3 favorite songs/bands/musicians {you choose} of the moment -and/or- be a follower of this blog.
4 ways to enter in all. you have until sunday, may 9th at midnight and i'll announce the winner on monday.
{i'm so excited!!}

i've been appreciating her music since beautiful sleepyhead and the laughing yaks came out in 2007. her voice is one of my favorites and the way she mixes classical music with hip hop beats is genius. i've seen her play live once, it was everything i thought it would be and more. i met her after the show and she was as kind as she is talented.
she liked my tattoos.
it was a good night.

she's playing this wednesday at mississippi studios for $10, $12 at the door. if you live in portland, you should go.
seriously.
you'll be glad you did.

... an oldie but a goodie.
i can't get enough of the song jolene (see music player on sidebar) the last few weeks, after hearing it in the film whip it
consequently my 4.98 year old squirrel can't get enough of whip it. she's asked for it as a birthday gift.
i will comply.
i've always had a certain fondness for dolly parton, grew up listening to her music. she's as sweet and petite as all get out. this is a ringtone on my cell phone that makes me smile every time i hear it. though i don't hear it too often lately... hint hint.

music monday presents...

... spanish sahara. a new track and hauntingly gorgeous video from foals.

i love this band a forever kind of love. i saw them play live for the first time in seattle a few years ago at a sub pop new talent release event. after waiting outside 2+ windy, rainy hours when the doors were supposed to be open, we finally got inside to what was one of the worst venues i've ever been to, where we still had to wait another hour for the opener to start playing, who by the way continues to hold the title of the absolute worst band i've ever seen or heard... but foals. they were spectacular. and so. much. fun. and incredibly friendly and lovely to talk to. made the whole night worth it. i've seen them a few times since here in portland and in colorado. i hope they make it back to the u.s. soon. if they do, you should go see them!!

spanish sahara is on their forthcoming sophomore album titled "total life forever" and will be available in the u.s. digitally on may 11th.

be still my stop-motion heart.

this is so beautiful it makes me want to cry. i have such a crush on alison sudol. her voice is magic and her lyrics are so beautifully and eloquently written i can barely make it through a song without tears. i often feel as though she is singing about my thoughts and feelings, if only i could articulate them as flawlessly as she. there is one song in particular that hits so close to home for me, i sob every time i hear it. i've been lucky enough to see a fine frenzy play live a few times, and if you haven't you should. she is spectacularly talented, incredibly sweet and so delightfully fun.

music monday presents...

... dead man's bones. a band started by ryan gosling (yes, that ryan gosling) and his friend zach shieldsclick the music player on the sidebar to hear the track "my body's a zombie for you" do it now, so you can listen while you read. or later, if you'd rather. just don't forget.

here's what i can tell you about dead man's bones:

they collaborated with the silverlake conservatory children's choir on the entire album. this makes my heart go all a flutter.

ryan gosling can sing. holy cuss he can sing. is there anything he can't do? i've even seen him salsa. well.

this is not a generic, celebrity, i'm gonna start a band because i'm famous, band. it's thoughtful, well made, unique and charming. it makes me smile, hard. listening to it today i actually said out loud "i think it's restoring my faith in humanity a little bit." plus, there's a little doo wop in there and i've got such a soft spot for that.

and, you'll hear wonderfully composed songs about monsters and ghosts falling in love. heart.

another absurdly talented actor who's music (and films) is/are most certainly worth checking out:
jason schwartzman. love. him. his band is called coconut records and it's a treat for the ears.

music monday

this weeks message comes fully equipped with a brand new blog feature. start the music player in the sidebar to listen to "go outside" by cults. i swear, the sun will come out if you play this song. or you'll at least feel like the sun came out.
unless you spend an unhealthy amount of your time (no, of course i don't) at pitchfork, there's a good chance you haven't yet heard of cults.
"There's more information on the wrapper of a candy bar than there
is on the Internet about Cults. The band's got an un-Googleable name
and no MySpace page in sight."
~Larry Fitzmaurice, pitchfork review

i can tell you 3 things about cults:
1) pitchfork gave the song "go outside" a 9!!!
2) they have released a 7" with 3 really great songs on it
3) here's the icing... you can download all 3 songs FOR FREE on their bandcamp page.
enjoy!!

music monday

i used to post about music a lot. what i'm loving, not loving, can't stop listening to, just discovered and want to share, shows i see... this is something i'd like to start doing more of again.
i've always been that girl that people come to for music... it's been about 4 and a half years since i left my last "real job" as a graphic designer, and my old co-workers still occasionally email me to ask what they should be listening to. i've always kinda liked being that girl. this last year i got my very own someone to go to for new music and between the two of us there's more good music than there is time to enjoy it! so, i'm gonna start sharing again.
let's begin with two of my absolute favorites, that i am never not wanting to listen to. wilderness survival and cosmo speedway. two friends, two bands, a cuss-load of talent, 4 records each, 8 in total, all self made by the two of them. seriously. you can listen on myspace (ws cs) and their websites (linked above). the new records are crazy good, go listen. NOW! (album covers below)

a few days ago this blog review was posted on obscure sound, and subsequently a few wilderness survival tracks were posted at hype machine go check that out too, and click on the little heart for each song, this will get them more recognition :)!!!
