aren't you glad to be alive?!!

it's a spectacularly beautiful spring day in portland. one of those extraordinary days where the air smells sweeter and the colors are brighter and people are radiant... the best kind of day. i went for a walk/jog to the hardware store to pick up a paintbrush and on my way home i was stopped by a lovely and rather petite elderly woman. she was walking slowly in one direction, i was walking quite quickly in the other. she reached out for my hand and said to me with more more excitement than a small child on christmas morning, "aren't you glad to be alive?" in that moment, she made all of the sad and hard and stress go away and i looked at her with the most enormous smile stretched across my face and replied "YES, i really am!!!" then she smiled, and we both continued walking. i'll probably never see her again, but i'm certain i'll never forget her.

we're all a little exhausted...

there has been an awful lot of non-zephyr related stuff going on in zephyr land lately. we got busy, the kiddos got sick, the stress started building... and we just pooped out.
But we're back and everyone's well and we want to give a BIG shout out to all of the fabulous people that pulled through at the last minute to join us for the race for the cure! We are ridiculously excited!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Just in case there is anyone left that still wants to join here's what you can do:
Since the online team registration was shutoff on August 29th, all additional participants will need to register as individuals. Anyone who missed the deadline can still run or walk with a team, they simply need to register as an individual participant and pickup their t-shirt, bib, and pin at Will Call at either the Health Expo or on Race day. So, if you register and want to hang out with us, just let us know and we'll add your name to our team roster!
It's gonna be FUN!!!

a little surprised...

and maybe disappointed too.

we thought it was a no-brain-er. breast cancer is a huge issue that effects everyone in one way or another. everyone's heard of the Susan G. Komen foundation, they've been making amazing things happen for years. we live in portland, and portland is an amazing place full of amazing people. we planned ahead, we tried to make it fun and exciting... we thought we'd get an overwhelming response, more team members and donations than we'd know what to do with. sadly this is not the case.

I've participated in the race for the cure before and it was one of the most amazing, memorable days of my life. it restored my faith in humanity. seeing thousands upon thousands of people come together for one cause is enough to bring a grown man to tears, I saw it happen. hearing other peoples stories, sharing yours, being a part of someone else's journey... I genuinely can't think of anything I would rather do on a sunday morning. I'll be walking for my Grandma Renee and my Cousin Denise, both are breast cancer survivors, and for everyone else who's been touched directly or indirectly by breast cancer or may one day be.

If you think you have time or just plain changed your mind and want to join us you only have 2 days left before it's too late (see the countdown in our sidebar).
You can click here to Join our team!!! You do actually have to follow our link which will direct you to our page on the Komen site and then:
1: click to join team
2: choose the option that reads "adult untimed walking and running events" and then click "next step"
3: Follow the instructions to complete your registration.
You can register your family members at the same time you register yourself if you'd like to bring along spouses, children, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents... you could bring anyone! You just have to register by August 29th!!!
Thank you to those of you who have joined and donated so far, we are so excited to meet those of you who will be participating!!!

5 reasons you should come hang out with us on Sept. 21st

1. Chances are you or someone you know has breasts and likes them and wishes for them to stay healthy.
2. You get to spend the day in our truly fantastic city, meeting new people, and sparking new friendships.
3. You'll get a little exercise, which will make you happy & healthy & awesome!
4. We promise we'll be fun & cool like the cartoon versions of us, and not creepy... and we won't bite, most likely...
5. Karma, just think of all the good karma! Plus, imagine how guilty you'll feel on Sept. 22nd if you didn't come join us... how could you live with yourself...

Come on portland-ers, don't let us down! There's only 10 days left to officially join our team, don't make us beg... it's not pretty!

p.s. we WILL be wearing shirts, not holding balls of yarn in front of our boobs... in case that was making you nervous.

Happy Mother's Day!

What a weekend... probably the best I've had in a long long time. The race for the cure event was an inexplainable experience... there were over 16,000 participants from new born babies to the oldest woman who I think was 99 years old. It was one of the most emotional days of my life, but in a good way... there really are a whole lot of good people out there and I got to spend the day with thousands of them. I can't wait to do it again!

Speaking of good people, thank you very much to the two wonderful ladies that added donations for us to take to the race. We will be sending some very special stitch markers to Renee in the next few days!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

it's a little last minute...

...but that's the way we roll!

This saturday we are participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Salt Lake City, and because we keep ourselves a little too busy and we're a little too easily disracted by just about everything... we are just now getting to the part where we ask for any donations you would like to add to ours, all of which will be taken to the race on saturday and donated in the name of knitting!
Any of you lovely knitters who choose to help us in our last-minute attempt to raise moo-lah will be stars in our eyes forever... and to show how much we appreciate your kindness we'll be doing a random drawing the day after the race for a very special, one-of-a-kind commemorative set of stitch markers! So please, if you donate don't forget to leave us a comment right here on this blog so that we can include you in the drawing!

Happy Knitting & Happy Donating!
